Where should the QR code go in your store?

Put the QR code at the till, where customers stand and wait, at eye level and within arm's reach. The closer it is to the moment of purchase, the more people scan.

Put the QR stand where customers stand and wait: at the till, at eye level and within reach. That is where they have a few seconds to spare and where you are already talking to each other. The stand should make a clear promise and be easy to scan.

It sounds obvious, but a stand in the wrong place can mean almost nobody joins. Here is what matters, for a café, a shop or a salon.

Where does the stand work best?

At the till

This is the default spot and usually the best one. The customer stands still, often looking at the counter, and staff can point to the stand. Place it next to the card terminal or till, not behind it.

At eye level and within arm’s reach

Customers should be able to scan without leaning over the counter or walking around it. Put the code at roughly chest to eye height and within an arm’s length. A code on the floor or high up on the wall rarely gets scanned.

Where customers wait

In a café that can be at the till and at the spot where drinks are picked up. In a salon there is waiting time at the chair and at the till. In a shop it may be the queue area. Waiting spots are good because the customer has time to take out their phone.

What does a good stand look like?

  • The reward comes first. “Free coffee after ten stamps” sells better than “Scan here”.
  • One short call to action. One verb: “Scan and collect stamps”.
  • A large code on a calm background. The code needs clear contrast and empty space around it.
  • Your logo and your colours. The stand should look like your business.

Fidelia’s stand is a clear acrylic holder in A5. You can let Fidelia design the sheet with your logo, your colours and the reward, or upload your own design with your shop’s QR code. The first stand is included in the plan, and each extra stand costs 199 kr excl. VAT.

How many stands do you need?

With one till, one stand is enough. With several tills, a serving hatch or several departments, one stand per spot is best, so that no customer has to walk to another counter to join. A stand per till costs little compared with the customers you would otherwise miss.

What should staff say?

The stand does half the job, staff do the rest. A simple line is enough: “Do you collect stamps with us? Scan the stand and you get your first stamp straight away.” Point to the stand as you say it. Ask every customer for the first few weeks, until it becomes routine. See how to launch a loyalty program for a week-by-week plan.

What are the common mistakes?

  • The stand is behind the till or off to the side. Customers do not see it when they pay.
  • A code that is too small or too much text. Then nobody has time to read it.
  • Glare from windows or lights. Check from the customer’s side at different times of day.
  • Nobody on staff mentions it. Without a reminder, customers miss it.
  • The stand is dirty or damaged. Wipe it, it is your face.

Does the customer need to download anything? No. They scan with the camera, enter their first name and email and add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. See a loyalty club without an app for more.

Summary

Place the stand at the till, at eye level and within reach. Put the reward first, test it yourself and ask staff to mention it. A stand in the right place does more than a pretty stand in the wrong one. See the pricing page for what the plans cost.

Questions

What is the best place for the QR stand?

At the till, where the customer stands and waits. That is where they have time and a free hand to take out their phone.

How big should the stand be?

Big enough to read from a couple of metres away, with a QR code large enough for the camera to read without the customer having to step close. Fidelia's stand is an A5 holder in clear acrylic.

Do I need more than one stand?

If you have several tills or serving points, one stand per spot works best. The first stand is included in the plan, and extra stands cost 199 kr excl. VAT.

What should the stand say?

The reward and a short call to action, for example: Scan and collect stamps, free coffee after ten. Customers should understand what they get before they scan.

Does the QR code still work if the stand gets dirty or scratched?

A dirty code can be hard to read. Wipe the stand now and then and test it yourself with your own phone.
