What does a loyalty reward really cost you?

A reward costs you its cost price divided by the number of stamps it takes: a reward costing 25 kr on an 8-stamp card is about 3 kr per visit. Enter your own figures below to see that cost per visit, as a share of the average spend, and once cards that are never completed are counted.

kr

What a customer spends on an ordinary visit.

%

Some customers never fill their card. 100 % is the worst case.

How do you use the calculator?

  1. What the reward costs you: the cost price of the free item, not its price on the menu.
  2. Stamps for one reward: how many stamped visits fill a card.
  3. Average spend per visit: what a customer pays on an ordinary visit. Your till’s average ticket is a good start.
  4. Cards that get completed: the share of cards that are ever filled. Leave it at 100 % for the worst case.

The results update as you type. Nothing is sent to a server.

How do you read the result?

  • Reward cost per visit is what every stamped visit costs you on a card that gets completed.
  • Share of what customers spend is that cost divided by the average spend: the real discount your card gives. Compare it with any discount or promotion you run today.
  • What a customer spends to earn the reward is stamps × average spend: the sales a full card stands for.
  • Real cost per visit counts unfinished cards: a customer who stops at 6 stamps out of 10 costs you nothing. This is closer to what the card costs you on average, but it is the figure most worth checking against your own data after a few months.

Worked example

How do you lower the cost without losing customers?

  • Pick a reward with a high perceived value and a low cost price: a drink, a sauce, a dessert, a coffee.
  • Add one or two stamps rather than shrinking the reward: customers notice a smaller reward more than an extra stamp.
  • Use a welcome stamp to start cards at 1: the card feels half full sooner, at the cost of one stamp per new customer.
  • Look at your figures after two months: in Fidelia Pro, stats show visits, rewards and returning customers, so you can replace the guesses above with real numbers.

Once you have a reward that works, see what it brings in with the loyalty ROI calculator or try it on a card with the card preview.

Questions

Should I count the menu price or the cost price of the reward?

The cost price: what the free item costs you in ingredients or stock. A free coffee that sells for 35 kr may cost you well under 10 kr. Counting the menu price overstates the cost of your programme.

What is a reasonable cost per visit?

There is no single right number. Compare the share of spend with what you would otherwise give away: a 10 % discount voucher costs 10 % of every sale it is used on, a stamp card only rewards customers who come back. Set the share you are comfortable with, then pick the stamps and reward that fit it.

How many stamps should my card have?

Enough that a regular fills it in a few weeks. If customers come once a week, 8 to 10 stamps means a reward every two months or so. Fidelia accepts from 3 to 30 stamps per card.

Does the calculator store what I type?

No. It runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.
