What is a geofence?

A geofence is a virtual boundary drawn around a real place, such as a circle of about 100 metres around your shop. When a phone carrying your card enters that area, the phone can react, for example by bringing your loyalty card up on the lock screen.

How does a geofence work on a Wallet card?

The card stores the coordinates of your shop. The phone, not the shop, watches its own position and decides when to react:

  • Apple Wallet lets a pass list up to 10 relevant locations. For store cards, iOS uses a small radius, of the order of a hundred metres, and may show the card on the lock screen with a short text. Apple calls the exact radius an implementation detail that can change.
  • Google Wallet accepts up to 10 merchant locations per card. Google decides how close the customer must be and how long they must stay, and writes the notification text itself. It only works for customers who allow Google Wallet notifications and precise, always-on location.

Why does it matter for a shop?

A reminder at the moment a customer walks past is the most timely message you can send: they are already nearby. Because the phone does the work, the shop never sees the customer’s location.

How does Fidelia handle it?

With Pro, you place your shops on a map and Fidelia adds them to every card (up to 10 locations, a radius of 100 m on iPhone). You write the reminder text once per language. Whether and when the reminder appears is up to iOS and Android, so treat it as a bonus rather than a guaranteed message.
