What is cashback in a loyalty programme?

Cashback gives the customer a percentage of each purchase back as credit, for example 5 % of a €40 basket becomes €2 to spend next time. It rewards bigger baskets, where a stamp card rewards the number of visits.

How does cashback work?

At each purchase, staff enter the amount; the card earns the chosen percentage as a balance. On a later visit the customer pays part or all of the bill with that balance. The cost is easy to read: a 5 % cashback costs at most 5 % of sales, and less when some balances are never spent.

Stamps or cashback?

  • Stamps suit shops where baskets are similar (a coffee, a haircut): one visit, one stamp.
  • Cashback suits shops where baskets vary a lot (a delicatessen, a boutique): a customer spending €80 earns more than one spending €8.

How does Fidelia handle it?

Cashback is one of the Pro card types. You set a rate from 1 to 30 %. At the counter, staff scan the card and type the amount on a till-style keypad; the balance on the customer’s Wallet card updates at once, and “Pay with balance” uses it. Every action is logged and a manager can correct a mistake, and a balance can never go negative.
